Abstract

The first scholarly monograph dedicated to the French Western filmExamines an overlooked body of film whose production spans the history of cinemaAdvances the recovery of popular European cinemaNuances the positioning of film as a transnational mode of cultural productionProvocatively asserts the French Western’s non-existence to open a singular perspective on an emblematic film genre in film scholarship, theory, and criticismThe production of films that may be called both ‘French’ and ‘western’ spans the history of cinema, and includes the films by celebrated stars and directors. However, with the exception of early silent production, French westerns are overlooked in studies of French cinema, of film genre, and even of the ‘transnational’ western.French Westerns: The Frontier of Film Genre and French Cinema is the first scholarly monograph dedicated to these films. This study advances the recovery of popular European cinema and adds new dimension to the understanding of the western genre. However, the purpose is not to stretch existing definitions of the genre or the national cinema to accommodate this production. Instead, these films expose and exploit the acts of imagination to which the logics of ‘French Cinema’ and ‘Western’ owe their coherence: acts that fail repeatedly, productively, and at times spectacularly.

Abstract

Abstract

"This volume explores and elucidates Critical Ancient World Studies, a new model for the study of the ancient world operating critically, setting itself against a long history of a discipline formulated to naturalise a hierarchical, white supremacist origin story for an imagined modern 'West'. Critical Ancient World Studies (CAWS) is a methodology for the study of antiquity that shifts away from the assumptions and approaches of the discipline known as 'classical studies' and / or 'Classics'. Although it seeks to reckon with the discipline's colonial history, it is not simply the application of decolonial theory, or the search to uncover subaltern narratives in a subject that has special relevance to the privileged and powerful. Rather, it dismantles the structures of knowledge that have led to this privileging, and questions the categories, ideas, themes, narratives, and epistemological structures that have been deemed objective and essential within the inherited discipline of 'Classics'. The contributions in this book, by an international group of researchers, offer a variety of situated, embodied perspectives on the question of how to imagine a more critical discipline, rather than a unified single view. The volume is divided into four parts: Critical Epistemologies, Critical Philologies, Critical Time and Critical Space, and Critical Approaches, and uses these as spaces to propose disciplinary transformation. Critical Ancient World Studies: The Case for Forgetting Classics is a must-read for scholars and practitioners teaching in the field of classical studies, and the breadth of examples also make it an invaluable resource for anyone working on the ancient world within other disciplines"--

Abstract

"Before answering the question 'how do we listen to video game music?' one should begin by asking 'Do we actually listen to video game music, and if so, when?' Of course, anyone steeped in gaming culture will be able to hum the theme to Super Mario Bros. (1985), but they might have picked it up when their little brother took the controller and played some of the game, giving them time to sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of the game. Or they might have heard it in one of the many YouTube video performances on the most outlandish instruments, or even by a full symphony orchestra at a Video Games Live concert. In between avoiding pits, picking up coins, jumping on goombas (the game's mushroom-like enemies) and making it to the end of a level within the time limit, is there really a moment during which the player can divert their attention away from all this to the music? Or is it somehow possible to both play and listen at the same time? I want to start my account of musical listening in video games at its boundaries, at those moments where we do not listen to whatever music there is. The above example from Robert Fink's Repeating Ourselves (2005) conveys one such boundary experience-specifically engineered background music that does not attract our attention, but still affects us somehow. This is just one of many situations in modern everyday life where we encounter music in this, usually acousmatic, way: in films, on the television, in video games, in restaurants and shops, and in the workplace. Sometimes we even engineer such situations ourselves, such as turning on the radio to help us study or creating a playlist for a morning run. In all these cases we are doing something else (or our attention is directed at something else) while music is playing, but this does not mean that our experience of the music is the same in each: the simple fact that we choose radically different music when reading a book and while going for a run suggests that more is going on"--

Abstract

This volume brings together the texts and translations for three Syriac martyr acts, set in Sasanian Persia during the reign of Shapur II (309-379 CE). These texts offer compelling witness to the challenges of a community's need to honor memory and experience, and evidence towards the formation and sustenance of Christian identity in the midst of Persian society and culture.

Abstract

The music reviews of Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner are central documents of 19th-century German musical culture. This book takes a closer look at the way these texts were written and explores the significant contributions Schumann and Wagner made to the discourse of musical appraisal. To that effect, the author raises fundamental questions that have thus far remained unaddressed: What textual features characterize the critical writings? How do Schumann and Wagner understand their roles as critics of music? And in what way do they reach out to the reader? Rather than understanding these critical writings exclusively as a gateway to the compositions and musical aesthetics of Schumann and Wagner, this book analyzes the texts through the lens of pragmatics, narratology and discourse analysis. Using this interdisciplinary perspective, the author proposes to understand Schumann and Wagner within the broader medial and discursive context of German Kritik. He challenges the dominant narrative that brands Schumann and Wagner as elitist Romantic critics, demonstrating instead that they actively encourage their readers to form their own judgements. This volume is an indispensable resource for scholars of German literature, periodicals and music alike.

Abstract

"Who were the first celebrity couples? How was their success forged? Which forces influenced their self-fashioning and marketing strategies? These questions are at the core of this study, which looks at the birth of a phenomenon, that of the couple in the show business, with a focus on the promotional strategies devised by two professional performers: Giovan Battista Andreini (1576-1654) and Virginia Ramponi (1583-ca.1631). This book examines their artistic path - a deliberately crafted and mutually beneficial joint career - and links it to the historical, social, and cultural context of post-Tridentine Italy. Rooted in a broad research field, encompassing theatre history, Italian studies, celebrity studies, gender studies, and performance studies, The Theatre Couple in Early Modern Italy revises the conventional view of the Italian diva, investigates the deployment of Catholic devotion as a marketing tool, and argues for the importance of the couple system in the history of Commedia dell'Arte, a system that continues to shape celebrity today"--

Abstract

"Debunks stereotypes about blindness, in which readers, receivers and spectators from antiquity to the present have been implicated because their persistence relies on audiences to perpetuate them. Argues for a new way of seeing - and of understanding classical reception - using assemblage-thinking and with a focus on the theatre"--
